Department of Telecommunications plans another spectrum auction in early 2016
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planning another round of spectrum auction, to be held in early 2016. It is expected that frequencies in the 2G, 3G and 4G bands will be put up for sale.
DoT has written to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) seeking reserve prices for the 2G spectrum in 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz bands, 3G spectrum in 2100 MHz band and 4G spectrum in 700 MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz bands. Under the new liberalised spectrum rules, all these bands can be used to offer any telecom services using any technology.
A probable reason for conducting the next round of auction could be the expiry of existing permits in 2017. However, the government will also sell additional frequencies in all the bands.
